Frequently Asked Questions

Is Moxa hot?

Yes, Moxa can feel hot on the skin, but because I use a shield between your skin and the moxa most patients experience the treatment as “warm” rather than “hot” or “burning”. Without the shield moxa treatment can feel uncomfortably hot, but still usually not hot enough to burn the skin.

Does it not burn the skin?

Practitioners are skilled enough not to burn the skin. It is important though to accurately find the right points to place the moxa on. It is said that if moxa is applied on the right points it should not burn – it should feel “good”.

Can Moxa treatment leave scars?

Using the combination of moxa and a bamboo stick typically makes the alive points red or “red purple” immediately after treatment. This should disappear within two weeks. The effect looks like a mini version of red bruises seen after a cupping session. If you absolutely do not want any red/purple marks, please let me know and I will use alternatives methods.

Can I practice moxa at home?

Fukaya kyu might be difficult to learn, especially the technique required to roll moxa punk into a very small (half the size of a grain of rice!) yet soft cone. However, there are other types of moxa which can be applied easily at home, such as Kameya kyu and Sennen kyu. If you are interested in applying moxa at home with no formal training, I can show you how to apply those easier (and safe) techniques 🙂
